He called out, to them pointing towards a hole in the wall almost perpendicular to their oath saying, "Hey, you! Don't go that way! The Alphadong's going to come that way!"
Andrea stepped out of the group, and walked toward her father. She crouched beside him and tried to take his hand.
"Daddy," she said slowly, her confused emotions almost choking her. "It's over. It's time to go home now."
He looked at her and smiled, showing no trace of recognition. "I can't go now," he said, as it he were talking to a stranger. "The Alphadong's going to be here soon and I have to be here to stop him." He showed her the ruined rifle and grinned proudly. Then he returned his gaze to the hole in the wall and ignored her completely.
Turning away, completely dejected, Andrea could hear the President saying, to someone else, "... you see what I mean about having to form a new government. Poor Wildwood! Just goes to show you that politics isn't for everyone. Wildwood was a good man, but he took his job way too seriously."
